Sane Shady

June 23, 1999 to December 3rd, 2004

Shady was not with me for very long, 2 1/2 years. I had hoped he would grow old with me. But he will be in my heart the rest of my life. There is not a day that goes by that something doesn’t trigger a fond memory of him. He was a beautiful boy with big expressive eyes and he loved to talk.

Shady was first and foremost a big puppy who loved to play and would run circles forever. He loved the snow and would bury himself. He loved going for walks and heading home he would gather any slack in the leash, hold it in his teeth and would proceed to walk me home. He did get to catch a rabbit, but never the squirrel he so longed for.

Shady was also very protective of me and my family. Walking at any time you could feel in his pull whether he approved of the person and or dog coming towards us. He was always cautious with strangers. He loved running and playing at the dog park and always tried to keep me in his sight. When I felt he wasn’t watching, I would hide behind a tree and he would run around in a panic till he found me, or I jumped out.

The day Shady was killed we had just gotten out of the van and were headed into the house when he spotted a man on a bike on the other side of the road. I had not seen the man so even though I had a good hold on his leash, it was not enough for the pull that Shady gave.

Shady ran and barked more than I have ever heard, he than jumped the ditch into the path of a truck. He did not suffer, he was killed instantly. I do believe that Shady would have done some serious harm to this person. Shady felt that this man was a threat and he was protecting his family. Thank-you Shady for your love, your devotion and your unselfish nature. Run free my big bud, till we meet again. You are always in my heart, love you.
